ABOUT THE ARTIST

My photo
Jane "in vain" Winkelman (1949–2012)
San Francisco CA, United States
Jane "in vain" Winkelman was a painter and considered an outsider artist. She resided on the edge of homelessness in SF’s Tenderloin and was introduced to painting at Hospitality House Community Arts. Her work is characterized by vivid colors, fantastic figures, and a strong political commentary. Her style has been compared to the old masters Bosch, Chagall, and Munch. In 1993, after her work gained attention in group shows and on the cover of Street Sheet, she was commissioned to produce an Absolut Vodka ad exhibiting alongside notables, Keith Haring, Warhol, and Leroy Neiman in the 1994 Absolut exhibition. Publications include: CONTEMPORARY FOLK ART, A COLLECTORS GUIDE (Chuck & Jan Rosenak, Smithsonian); SELF TAUGHT, OUTSIDER AND FOLK ART, A Guide to American Artists, Locations, and Resources (Betty Carol Sellen); THE ABSOLUT BOOK, featured in the American Visionary Museum’s ERROR EROS exhibition; and THE VIEW FROM HERE (Coalition on Homelessness, SF). Press: Robert L. Pincus for Urban Diaries exhibition; featured in WE/Mbl Russian/American press in (US/Russia). Selected collections: Robert A. Lewis; Chuck & Jan Rosenak (NMAA, Smithsonian)
